Switch to ArchiCAD

The United States Coast Guard
Goes with ArchiCAD becuase of compatiablity and interoperablity

We have updated and renamed our conversion web page to include a Conversion guide for Revit users who have been switching to ArchiCAD.

I recently wrote down some reason why an architectural firm should choose ArchiCAD. As an Architect this is my view why Graphisoft is a safer choice.

1 Vision: Graphisoft has had a single vision since 1982. Service to the AEC industry. A 3D model approach to design, visualization, documentation, and data for 20 years. I don't know of many software companies that have maintained a single vision and focus for so long. Graphisoft presents a clear product line, ArchiCAD and ArchiFM. It's not hard to figure out which product is going to being around in a couple of years.

2 The right size: Graphisoft is large enough, last I remember they ranked 3rd largest AEC software provider worldwide per Dataquest. Large enough to experiment and be publicly traded, but small enough to react to user input, or to develop special solutions for a single large firm.

3 Support: Which company supports it's users better? One example; Graphisoft still supports the Macintosh, not really all that important you might say (if you are a windows user), but it speaks to the type of company behavior that people should expect from a software developer. Discipline in how software developed is key in not messing up your users.

4 Interoperability: Graphisoft believes in it by supporting more file formats such as DWG r12,r13,r14, 2000 and soon 2004, DGN but more importantly IFC to be able to exchange object model data for the long term. IFC is becoming more important as goverment agencys start supporting it, like the Department of Energy and the Coast Guard Civil Engineering CAD Requirements

5 Company Management: Graphisoft while publicly traded is still owned mostly by a small group of people who started the company. This is how they have been able to maintain a constant vision.

6 Product: ArchiCAD simply works, it's been around the architecture block. It has solved the problems that are inherent in a single building model approach. Feature for feature for architecture no other product comes close. One example being: ArchiCAD's Teamwork solves the problem of how to get more than one person to work on the single building model successfully.

Apple G5 gets it's game on.

Apple G5 powermac

Apple users have reason to be optimistic about the future of the Apple platform. I would caution about being to excited until we see how it runs ArchiCAD, but the fact that the new IBM chip reportedly crunches floating point math a lot better than the G4 (altivec was good for integer math i.e. photoshop, but did little for floating point math i.e. ArchiCAD) The G5 running at 2 Ghz with a 1Ghz bus and better handling of memory should all add up to much better ArchiCAD performance. The proof will be in the shipped product in August, but it does look like this innovated design gives apple some legs for the future. Apple had promised to deliver "significantly faster" computers, and we are being cautiously optimistic. Graphisoft developers are working with Apple to optimize ArchiCAD for the current product line and the G5. Hopefully ArchiCAD 8.1 will be tested on the G5 as it is moving closer to beta.

Watch Steve Jobs explain it to their developers here (he talks about the G5 in the second half of his keynote address, but its all good)

#1 Piranesi will be out on the Macintosh this year. (september)
#2 AMD and Intel also are coming out with 64 bit processors.

Align View Tutorial

Align View Rendering

Click on any of the images for a larger view.

Align View is the last command in the Image Menu. To use it you'll need a the photo of the existing building or place.

Align View Start Photo

You will need to place that photo on the ArchiCAD plan using the figure tool near the project plan. You will also need to know the elevations of 2 pair of points on the building. The Head and Sill of windows work well. The Points need to line up vertically.

Plan of Align View

Select the photo and choose Image/AlignView. Click on the plan where you know the elevation (jamb of the window), then click on the photo in the same spots (corner of the head and jamb). A dialog box will come up prompting you to input the elevations. Then ArchiCAD will place a camera on the plan in the precise spot that will allow you to Align the view by using the same photo as the background in the 3D window and photorendering window. In this example I turned off the exterior walls to show a new stair enclosure around an exiting stair.

Training by the hour
Sometimes this can be more cost effective than taking a class. We charge $85.00 an hour and we can do this in our office or yours (included $40 an hour travel time) or we can do it over the internet. Make a list of questions and things you want to cover and we can schedule a session. Web training works great.
