ArchiCAD 8: Important Info:

ArchiCAD 8.0, technically, has been modernized, rewritten, and given it's own solid-modeling kernel (no small task). Most software developers pay to use someone elses SM kernel. Plotmaker which used to have it's own code base now has the same code base as ArchiCAD. Because of this there should be no difference when one plots out of AC or PM.
ArchiCAD now has some 4 million lines of code. (Thats about 18 cases of paper if printed, or 60 major project spec books.) The shipping library has over 1 million lines.

With a major upgrade like this comes some issues to watch for.
Most 3rd party products need updating. Librarys part should be OK as long as the part don't have GDL errors.

The Standardized Template Systems hopes to be updated in a couple of weeks, while most others will tend to be longer. I would expect it will take Cigraph, the makers of ArchiTerra and ArchiForma, will take a couple of months. I've heard they are planning on having an update to ArchiTerra 1.0 free to existing users, but also they are working on an improved 2.0.
Plan2Model, ArchiGlazing, are scheduled to be updated. I have no word on an updated Piranesi plug-in yet. Artlantis 4.5 for ArchiCAD should be coming any week now.

The upside to the new code base is that it means better plugins can be developed even for rendering. So for example if a 3rd party wanted to bring their rendering engine into ArchiCAD, it is possible now.

In the 8.0 Library, new steel library parts exists (similar to the MSA parts) that are the AWI Steel Shapes but all in 3D!. A bug does exists in the MSA detailer Template frame, otherwise the detailing objects work as before.

If you bring a 7.0 file into 8.0 what was once a quickview gets put into the new navigator as a view set. Same with 3D quickviews.

However I would not recommend switching programs in the middle of a project. A dose of common sense here.

If you have a template, that you work with, I would open it in 8.0 and take a look. But you may want to consider recreating it in 8.0 using the 8.0 library. The 8.0 library is nicer with, what technically is called "editable hotspots". This is the term used to describe the fact that you can drag mullions in a curtain wall objects in plan or 3D without opening the object settings. Other types of objects have different editable actions.

Some of my personal favorite features of 8.0 include:

  • ArchiCAD reads an Archive directly without having to unpack the library. One can keep office standard objects in an archive and can be sure that no one will change them. In fact this is how the 8.0 library ships.
  • The height elevation markers have a datam style.
  • You can grab and move a door or window marker on the floor plan without going into the object dialog box.
  • In TeamWork layer combinations can be used to define workspaces.
  • Using Solid Modeling instead of "Trim to Roof"
  • Using Solid Modeling for Vertically compound walls
  • The new Sketch render.

Here are the single key shortcuts from Greg Blunier, thanks Greg. Some are old, but you won't find all these in the documentation.
